Subject: Fw: Man wrongfully imprisoned for 28 years for murder is freed after new evidence emerges
Lamar Johnson has been freed from prison after serving 28 years for a murder he did not commit. Johnson was sentenced to life in 1995 for the 1994 murder of Marcus Boyd, a crime that another man confessed to during a hearing in December 2021. St. Louis Circuit Judge David Mason vacated Johnson’s murder conviction, ruling that he was wrongly imprisoned and there was clear evidence of his innocence. The ruling comes after years of appeals and legal battles by Johnson and his legal team, and after an investigation by Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner’s Conviction Integrity Unit found misconduct by the investigation’s lead detective and other constitutional errors in the original trial. The case also inspired a state law that provides prosecutors with a legal avenue to appeal cases in which they believe defendants were wrongfully convicted.
