But thanks to a bizarre geological formation, the river is abruptly squeezed at the Bolton Strid, funneling hundreds of gallons of water through a tiny six-foot channel. As a result, the water travels faster and thrashes side to side, up, down, and every which way, causing burbles and whirlpools to arise that can quickly suck a human under.
