1. Did you know that residents in Surabaya, Indonesia can pay for the bus with plastic waste instead of money? Paying with plastic will grant you with 2 hours of travel. The aim is to reduce plastic waste whilst getting more people to use public transport, thus lowering the number of cars on the road.

2. Did you know that in 2001 India started building roads that hold together using polymer glues made from shredded plastic waste? These plastic roads have developed no potholes and cracks after years of use, and they are cheaper to build. As of 2016, there are more than 21,000 miles of plastic roads. Learn more.
3. Did you know that a train company invented a way to ship oil without pipelines; bitumen is converted into a solid product and sealed in plastic made from recyclables. 4. Did you know that Wax Worms can eat and break down one of the most common plastics (polyethylene) into organic compounds. Wax worms are common insects which evolved to live in bee hives. Learn more.
5. Did you know that a Turkish company Pugedon recently introduced a vending machine in Istanbul that releases food and water for the city’s stray dogs in exchange for recycled plastic bottles? Once someone deposits their bottle at the top, food is released at the bottom. The Pugedon Smart Recycling Boxes operate at no charge to the city, and the recycled bottles cover the cost of the food. 6. Did you know that researchers discovered bacteria that naturally evolved to eat away at polyethylene terephthalate, the plastic known as PET or polyester. While studying the structure of an enzyme found in that bacteria, they accidentally created a “mutant enzyme” that can break down plastic within a few days. Learn more.
7. Did you know that in 1992 thousands of plastic yellow ducks broke free from a cargo ship on the Pacific. They floated halfway around the world for years and were used to study ocean currents. Learn more.
8. Did you know that Scientists in the Netherlands are developing an ocean cleaning system which uses the ocean's currents and a barrier to remove plastic waste. A 100km long system will be deployed in 2020 to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Learn more.
