Subject: Fw: Why is a fire truck red?
I have always wondered why a fire truck is red? I have noticed in other states and counties they are yellow fire trucks as well. Any information is appreciated, thanks ~Jimmy.
Okay Jimmy let's figure out why fire trucks are red.
After researching the Interwebs for an answer I’ve seemed to have stumbled on a common theory that red was chosen because red seems to be the one color that would allow the trucks to stand out amongst other vehicles on the road. During 1900’s Ford vehicles were only painted in black and it seems to make sense that something in a bright red color would indeed stand out.
Why are some fire trucks not red?
After many studies by government agencies it appears that the color red is really not a good color for emergency vehicles. Apparently red does not stand out as well in darkness. The color that did stand out was a lime-yellow and many countries have adopted this color.
Paint color may not really matter according to a 2009 U.S. Fire Administration study that looked at how to reduce morbidity and mortality of first responders operating on U.S. roadways. While the study mentions Solomon's research and the validity of lime-yellow being an easy color for the human eye to discern, USFA researchers concluded that the paint color was not important.

Does a fire truck carry water?
On this pumper/tanker fire engine, the primary water tank is inside the vehicle, it holds 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters) of water and it runs down the center in the rear of the truck. A drop tank is like a big aboveground pool that can hold about 2,000 gallons of water.

How many firefighters are in a truck?
The national standard, set by the NFPA for public safety, is a minimum of FOUR firefighters. In Marin, many fire engines have only two firefighters. Of the 35 fire engines on duty daily in Marin, not one meets the NFPA minimum of four firefighters, and only a handful even have three firefighters at any given time.
