The original pledge of allegiance did not contain the words "under god" even though it was written by an ordained minister. (smithsonianmag.com)
Just two years later in 1956, the US gov't changed its national motto to "In God We Trust" and shortly thereafter Eisenhower declared it must be included on all currency.
Also later that year, he instituted the annual "National Prayer Breakfast" held in the White House and included the phrase "So help me God" to the oath taken by Federal judges and other officials.
All as a response to our Cold War atheist foes, the Soviets.
